IPE Wood Deck Restoration

This project involved the full restoration of a large IPE hardwood deck in Lakeway, Austin, Texas. Over time, the deck had turned gray due to UV exposure, rain, and natural weathering.

Our goal was to restore the natural color of the IPE wood, repair structural elements, and protect the deck with professional hardwood oil treatment.

IPE is an extremely dense tropical hardwood commonly used for high-end decks in Texas. Because of its density, proper deck cleaning, sanding, brightening, and oil application must be done correctly to achieve long-lasting results.

When we arrived at the property in Lakeway, TX, the IPE deck showed typical signs of aging:

  • Gray, oxidized surface from sun exposure
  • Uneven color across deck boards
  • Loose deck boards and fasteners
  • Worn stair treads
  • Weathered posts and railings
Although the structure was still solid, the surface needed a complete IPE deck restoration process to bring the wood back to life.
Step 1 – Sanding the IPE Deck Surface

The first step of the restoration was sanding the deck boards to remove the oxidized layer of wood.
IPE hardwood is extremely dense, so sanding is essential to:
  • Remove gray weathered wood
  • Open the wood surface for oil absorption
  • Smooth uneven areas of the deck boards

We carefully sanded the entire deck surface using professional sanding equipment to achieve an even and clean surface while preserving the integrity of the hardwood.
Final Result

After the full IPE deck restoration in Lakeway, Austin, the deck was transformed:

  • The natural color of the hardwood was restored
  • The surface became smooth and uniform
  • Structural elements were stabilized
  • The deck is now protected against sun and moisture

This project demonstrates how professional IPE deck cleaning and restoration can bring an old hardwood deck back to life.
Step 7 – Hardwood Deck Oil Application

The final step of the restoration was applying hardwood deck oil designed specifically for IPE wood.

This oil treatment:
  • Enhances the natural color of the hardwood
  • Protects the wood from UV exposure
  • Helps prevent drying and cracking
  • Improves water resistance

Because IPE is extremely dense, proper surface preparation is required to allow the oil to penetrate the wood effectively.
Step 4 – Deck Board Re-Fastening

During the restoration process we also inspected the deck structure and addressed several maintenance issues.
We performed deck board re-fastening, which included:

  • Tightening loose deck boards
  • Re-securing boards with deck screws
  • Stabilizing sections of the deck surface

This step improves the durability and safety of the deck while preventing future movement.
Step 3 – Wood Brightening Treatment

After the cleaning stage, we applied a wood brightener treatment.
Brightening is critical when restoring hardwood decks because it:

  • Neutralizes the wood surface
  • Restores the natural golden tone of IPE wood
  • Prepares the deck for oil penetration

This process dramatically improves the natural appearance of the hardwood and ensures the oil finish absorbs evenly.
Step 6 – Post and Railing Repairs

We also repaired several structural elements of the deck, including posts and railings. These repairs included:

  • Reinforcing loose railings
  • Securing posts
  • Improving the stability of the deck guard system

Maintaining railings is essential for safety and for the overall appearance of the deck.

Step 5 – Stair Repair and Reinforcement

The deck stairs showed signs of wear from years of use. As part of the project we completed stair repair and reinforcement, including:

  • Stabilizing stair framing
  • Re-fastening stair treads
  • Improving the overall strength of the staircase

Proper stair maintenance is important for both safety and longevity of the deck.
Step 2 – Deep Chemical Deck Cleaning

After sanding, we performed a professional deck cleaning process using specialized wood cleaning chemicals.

This step helps remove:
  • Dirt and organic buildup
  • Old oils and contaminants
  • Sanding dust trapped in the wood grain

Deep cleaning ensures that the hardwood surface is fully prepared for the next step in the restoration process.
