This was a comprehensive restoration of a 17-year-old wooden deck in Austin. We dismantled the old decking and side screens, removed all rotten structural elements, replaced two support posts, added new joists so spacing never exceeds 16 inches (the standard required for composite decking), installed Forest Brown Grooved Edge Capped Composite Decking Boards, replaced all perimeter trim to match, and added a lightweight railing on the staircase to the yard.

The Problem: A 17-Year-Old Structure That Could Not Hold New Decking

After 17 years the deck’s structural elements were rotten, and two of its support posts were failing. Laying new decking over that structure would have repeated the problem.

The client also wanted composite decking, which requires tighter joist spacing than the old framing provided, so the structure needed to be rebuilt to the right standard first.

How We Restored It — Stage by Stage

Stage 1

Removal of Old Components

We dismantled the existing wooden decking and side screens. All rotten structural elements were removed, and two support posts were replaced to ensure safety and stability.

Stage 2

Structural Reinforcement

New joists were added to keep spacing between them at no more than 16 inches, adhering to the standards required for composite decking installation.

Stage 3

Installation of New Decking

We installed Forest Brown Grooved Edge Capped Composite Decking Boards, which give the deck a modern appearance and enhanced durability suited to the Austin climate.

Stage 4

Finishing Touches

All perimeter trim boards were replaced to match the new decking. A lightweight railing was installed on the staircase leading to the yard, adding safety and complementing the deck’s look.

The Result

The deck now has a refreshed, contemporary look and much greater resilience against the elements. The structure underneath was rebuilt to the standard composite decking needs, which makes this a valuable, long-term upgrade for the property.

FAQ

Questions About This Type of Project

Why does composite decking need joists closer together?
Composite boards are more flexible than wood, so they need tighter support to stay flat and avoid sagging. Joist spacing of no more than 16 inches on center is the standard we build to for composite decking, which is what we did on this deck.
Can a 17-year-old deck be restored instead of replaced?
Sometimes. Here we removed all rotten structural elements, replaced two support posts, added new joists, and installed new decking, which gave the client a refreshed deck without starting from scratch. We confirm what is salvageable during the on-site assessment.
What is capped composite decking?
Capped composite boards have a protective outer shell over a composite core, which improves stain, scratch, and fade resistance. This project used Forest Brown Grooved Edge Capped Composite Decking.
How much does it cost to redeck an older deck with composite in Austin?
Cost depends on deck size, how much of the structure needs rebuilding, and the composite line selected. We give a free on-site estimate and a written proposal before any work begins.
Do you replace deck railings and trim as part of a restoration?
Yes. On this project all perimeter trim boards were replaced to match the new decking and a lightweight railing was added on the stairs to the yard.
