old wood two-level terrace
In Austin, Texas, we recently undertook a comprehensive restoration of an aged two-level wooden deck, focusing on structural reinforcement, replacement of deteriorated materials, and aesthetic enhancements to improve both durability and appearance. The project spanned four days, with significant improvements made to the deck's support structure and finish.
Day 1: Structural Reinforcement and Preparation
Our team conducted a thorough inspection to identify areas of decay and instability requiring reinforcement. We installed new support joints at critical structural points to strengthen the deck, particularly where the wood had weakened over time. To protect the underlying joists from moisture and prevent rot, we applied Black Butyl Deck Joist Tape, significantly enhancing the deck's longevity. Additionally, we removed old, damaged wooden boards and cleared the surface of debris to create a clean base for the new decking material.
Day 2: Replacement of Wooden Decking
We selected high-quality composite boards, specifically Prime+ 1 in. x 6 in. x 12 ft. Coconut Husk Grooved Edge Scalloped Composite Deck Boards, known for their durability, weather resistance, low maintenance, and attractive appearance. The composite boards were measured, cut, and installed using Exterior Coated Trimhead Hidden Edge Deck Screws, ensuring secure and concealed fastening for a smooth, clean finish. Each board was carefully aligned and fastened to prevent movement or warping over time, maintaining a polished appearance.
Day 3: Installation of Hand Railings
We opted for pre-made metal panels and posts from US Door and Fence for the railings, specifically the Pro Series 32 in. H x 8 ft. W Spaced Bar Flat Metal Fence Panels, to create a strong and visually appealing railing system. The panels were secured along the stairs using US Door and Fence Black Metal Fence Posts with Flange and Post Caps, providing a solid base and support for the railing system. The posts were carefully fixed in multiple spots to ensure stability, adding a modern, finished look to the deck.
Day 4: Painting and Final Touches
We applied high-quality exterior paint to protect the new joints, boards, and railings, ensuring an even application that matched the existing color scheme for a cohesive look. A thorough inspection of the deck was conducted, checking each component for stability and ensuring all parts were securely fastened. The project concluded with a final cleanup, leaving the space neat and polished.
The restoration transformed the old deck into a sturdy, visually appealing, and long-lasting structure. The use of Prime+ Coconut Husk Grooved Edge Scalloped Composite Deck Boards reduced future maintenance needs and provided a stylish, contemporary appearance. The addition of Black Butyl Deck Joist Tape protected the joists from moisture and rot, while hidden Exterior Coated Trimhead Deck Screws maintained a seamless look. The installation of ready-made railings and posts from US Door and Fence enhanced stability and safety on the stairs. The finished deck met all expectations in quality and appearance, providing a durable and attractive outdoor space.
