We restored an aged two-level wooden deck in Austin over four days, focusing on structural reinforcement, replacement of deteriorated materials, and aesthetic improvements. The work included new support joints, Black Butyl joist tape to protect the joists from moisture, composite decking installed with hidden fasteners, pre-made metal railings along the stairs, and exterior paint to finish the new joints, boards, and railings.
The Problem: A Weakened Structure Under Decayed Decking
A thorough inspection found areas of decay and instability, particularly where the wood had weakened over time. The decking boards were old and damaged, and the structure needed strengthening before anything new could go on top.
The aim was a deck that would last: stronger support, moisture protection on the joists, a low-maintenance surface, and a safe railing at the stairs.
How We Restored It — Day by Day
Day 1: Structural Reinforcement and Preparation
We installed new support joints at critical points, particularly where the wood had weakened. To protect the underlying joists from moisture and prevent rot, we applied Black Butyl Deck Joist Tape. Old, damaged boards were removed and the surface was cleared for the new decking.
Day 2: Replace the Decking
We installed Prime+ 1 in. x 6 in. x 12 ft. Coconut Husk Grooved Edge Scalloped Composite Deck Boards, chosen for durability, weather resistance, and low maintenance. Boards were fastened with Exterior Coated Trimhead Hidden Edge Deck Screws for a smooth finish with concealed fasteners.
Day 3: Install the Railings
We used pre-made metal panels and posts from US Door and Fence: Pro Series 32 in. H x 8 ft. W Spaced Bar Flat Metal Fence Panels secured with Black Metal Fence Posts with Flange and Post Caps, fixed at multiple points along the stairs for stability.
Day 4: Painting and Final Touches
We applied high-quality exterior paint to protect the new joints, boards, and railings, matching the existing color scheme. Every component was checked for stability and securely fastened, and the site was cleaned.
The Result
The old deck is now a sturdy, visually appealing, and long-lasting structure. The composite boards reduce future maintenance, the joist tape protects the framing from moisture and rot, the hidden fasteners keep the surface clean, and the ready-made railings add stability and safety on the stairs.
