This large IPE hardwood deck in Lakeway had turned gray from UV exposure, rain, and natural weathering — with loose boards, worn stair treads, and weathered railings. The structure was sound; the surface needed the complete IPE restoration process. We sanded off the oxidized layer, deep-cleaned and brightened the wood, re-fastened boards, repaired stairs and railings, and finished with IPE-specific hardwood oil — restoring the deck's natural golden color and protecting it from Lake Travis sun and moisture.
The Problem: A Gray, Weathered IPE Deck
When we arrived at the Lakeway property, the deck showed the classic signs of aging IPE in the Lake Travis microclimate: a gray, oxidized surface from sun exposure, uneven color across boards, loose deck boards and fasteners, worn stair treads, and weathered posts and railings. IPE is an extremely dense tropical hardwood — which is exactly why generic deck treatments fail on it, and why correct restoration requires a specific sequence.
The 7-Step IPE Restoration — Step by Step
Sanding the IPE Deck Surface
Professional sanding removed the gray, weathered layer, opened the dense wood surface for oil absorption, and smoothed uneven areas — while preserving the integrity of the hardwood. On IPE this step is non-negotiable: oil cannot penetrate an oxidized surface.
Deep Chemical Deck Cleaning
Specialized wood cleaning chemicals removed dirt, organic buildup, old oil residue, and sanding dust trapped in the grain — ensuring the surface was fully prepared for treatment.
Wood Brightening Treatment
Brightening neutralized the wood surface after cleaning and restored the natural golden tone of the IPE — the step that dramatically improves appearance and ensures the oil finish absorbs evenly.
Deck Board Re-Fastening
We tightened loose boards, re-secured them with deck screws, and stabilized sections of the surface — improving durability and safety and preventing future movement.
Stair Repair and Reinforcement
The stairs showed years of wear. We stabilized the stair framing, re-fastened treads, and reinforced the staircase — a safety-critical detail on any elevated Lakeway deck.
Post and Railing Repairs
We reinforced loose railings, secured posts, and improved the stability of the deck guard system — essential both for safety and for the finished look of the deck.
Hardwood Deck Oil Application
The final step: hardwood oil designed specifically for IPE. It enhances the natural color, protects against UV, helps prevent drying and cracking, and improves water resistance. Because IPE is so dense, the preparation in steps 1–3 is what allows this oil to penetrate effectively.
The Result
The natural golden color of the hardwood was fully restored, the surface became smooth and uniform, structural elements were stabilized, and the deck is now protected against Lake Travis sun and moisture for the next 2–4 years.
